2009 Junior Hockey World Cup: Malaysia, Singapore co-host
THE International Hockey Federation (FIH) yesterday announced that Malaysia and Singapore will co-host the 2009 Menís Junior World Cup.
Twenty teams will compete in the expanded tournament which will see matches being played in Johor Baru and Singapore.
Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) secretary general Datuk S.S. Cheema confirmed they had received the notification from the FIH Executive Board that Malaysia won the joint-bid, adding that it is a great honour and privilege to be appointed as co-hosts.
MHC deputy president Tunku Majid Sultan Iskandar and Singapore Hockey Federation president Annabell Dhillon will act as co-chairmen of the Junior World Cup organising committee.
The FIH also awarded the 2009 Womenís Junior World Cup to the United States while the decision to expand the menís tournament from 16 to 20 teams was made in order to directly qualify both Malaysia and Singapore before reverting to 16 teams for future tournaments.
In the last Junior World Cup in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 2005, Malaysia finished 10th.
