Hockey Australia has released its 2017 Australian Championships calendar.

A number of successful initiatives that first appeared in 2016 will be repeated in 2017, including the move to bring male and female Australian Championships together at the same event and the hosting of the month-long Festival of Indoor Hockey.

Hockey Australia Chief Executive Cam Vale said, “2016 was the first year of Hockey Australia’s new approach to its Australian Championships and with the outstanding support of our event partners we have delivered many of the improvements to participants and stakeholders that we set out to.

“Our Australian Championships provide hockey participants – players, officials, coaches, volunteers and administrators – the chance to represent their state or territory at the highest level in the country. Through 2017 we will continue to strive to give them the best experience we can, with the help of our event delivery partners.”

January’s Festival of Indoor Hockey returns to Wollongong for the second year of Hockey Australia’s partnership with Destination Wollongong. It will see the men’s and women’s Open competitions raise the curtain ahead of the Under 21s, Under 13s, Under 18s and Under 15s. The action gets underway on Thursday 5 January and runs through until Wednesday 25 January.

Destination Wollongong Chairperson Tania Brown is pleased to welcome the Indoor Australian Championships, as well as the Under 21 men’s and women’s outdoor Australian Championships to Wollongong in 2017.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase Wollongong’s excellent hockey facilities as well as our beautiful beaches and escarpment. I would encourage competitors and their families to take some time out to experience all that Wollongong has to offer, from our burgeoning small bar and café scene to the local attractions and shopping precinct.”

Moorebank in New South Wales will play host to the Under 15 boys’ and girls’ Australian Championships in April as part of Hockey Australia’s partnership with Destination NSW.

The women’s Masters Australian Championships will also be held in New South Wales as they head to Newcastle, which did an excellent job as the host city of the 2016 Grand Masters World Cup.

The Under 18 men’s and women’s competitions return to Tasmania and will take place in Hobart in April as part of a five-year agreement with the Tasmanian Government.

Also in Hobart, the largest Australian Championships event, the men’s Masters Australian Championships will take place from late September.

A month earlier, in August, Australia’s top country players will converge on Townsville and the Parks Hockey Club for the Country Australian Championships.

The arrangements for the 2017 Australian Hockey League and Under 13 Carnival will be confirmed following the 2016 events in Perth, which will be reviewed upon their conclusion.
