HA Congratulates Rockhampton On 2019 Oceania Cup Hosting Rights

Hockey Australia (HA) today congratulates the Rockhampton Hockey Association (RHA) on being awarded official hosting rights for the 2019 Oceania Cup.

The Oceania Hockey Federation have confirmed Rockhampton as the host for next year’s event, which was last year won by both the Hockeyroos and the Kookaburras in Sydney.

The Hockeyroos' 2018 Women's World Cup campaign has commenced with a 3-2 victory over Japan at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London on Sunday morning (AEST).

 Australia raced to a three-goal lead five minutes into the second half before Japan rallied but the Hockeyroos held on for three points to start the World Cup.

Tasmanian hockey legend Peter Holmes notched up his 1000th senior game for the Diamondbacks last weekend but he was close to missing his own celebrations.

Holmes began his hockey journey, aged 10, in 1967 at St. Virgil’s Primary School where he was invited to join the school’s hockey team. Holmes was already playing in the school’s Australian Rules football team but had to choose between the two sports during an inter-school carnival.

Mark Knowles – Flag bearer for the Australian Commonwealth Games team at the opening ceremony

It is now common knowledge that Australia’s decorated Kookaburra Mark Knowles is set to retire from International hockey after the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The four times Commonwealth Games player is bowing out to the accolades of an International audience that not only includes the hockey fraternity but the larger non hockey community. Mark was given the prestigious honour of leading out the Australian Commonwealth Games team as the flag bearer. It was anticipated that the global viewing audience was 1.5 billion people. The world got to know Mark Knowles and in this special moment in time hockey through the efforts of Mark was elevated as a sport.
