Mark Knowles – Flag bearer for the Australian Commonwealth Games team at the opening ceremony

It is now common knowledge that Australia’s decorated Kookaburra Mark Knowles is set to retire from International hockey after the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The four times Commonwealth Games player is bowing out to the accolades of an International audience that not only includes the hockey fraternity but the larger non hockey community. Mark was given the prestigious honour of leading out the Australian Commonwealth Games team as the flag bearer. It was anticipated that the global viewing audience was 1.5 billion people. The world got to know Mark Knowles and in this special moment in time hockey through the efforts of Mark was elevated as a sport.

Gaudoin: Hockeyroos Must Learn From This For World Cup

Hockeyroos coach Paul Gaudoin wants his side to learn the lessons of their 2018 Commonwealth Games final defeat for their betterment ahead of the 2018 World Cup and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Australia will compete at the World Cup in London in July and August, having lost 4-1 to New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games gold medal match on Saturday afternoon.

The Kookaburras have given retiring captain Mark Knowles a fairy tale finish and secured their sixth consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal after a 2-0 win over New Zealand in Saturday’s final at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre.

Second quarter goals from Aaron Kleinschmidt and Matt Dawson secured the victory for Australia, who also made it 33 straight Commonwealth Games wins in the process.

The Hockeyroos are a win away from clinching top spot in Pool B after an entertaining 0-0 draw with New Zealand in their 2018 Commonwealth Games clash at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre on Monday night. 

Australia and New Zealand traded blows throughout an end-to-end contest in front of boisterous crowd where little separated the sides with top spot in Pool B up for grabs.

The Hockeyroos edged the possession count 54-46 and had 34 circle penetrations compared to New Zealand’s 16 but couldn’t find a way through after a strong first half.

The wait is over ‘bring on’ the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

The 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast (‘a nice ring to that’) are at the doorstep. The evidence of years of planning and preparation will be witnessed and judged as athletes, officials and spectators come from all nations for the event period of between 5-14 April. Of course there is only one competition that is worth watching and that of course is the men’s and women’s hockey. In this article we look at the event itself and what might look forward to and secondly the legacy of the post Commonwealth Games.
